In this study, the microbiota, diet and living situations of 178 elderly were compared. After comparing diet and microbiota, it appeared that the diversity and composition of the diet (fat and fibre content) has a determining effect on the microbiota composition, also after correction for living situations. It is suggested that diet shapes the microbiota, which consequently affects health in older people. The article also proposes that dietary supplements that benefit specific components of the microbiota may prove useful for maintaining health in older people.
