In this podcast professor Eggersdorfer of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen is interviewed about the importance of micronutrients in immunity, especially regarding viral respiratory tract infections. Recently he and others published a paper about this topic, which is briefly discussed in the podcast. In short, there are several micronutrients that are important for a healthy immune system. These nutrients include folate, zinc, iron, selenium, magnesium, copper, omega 3 fatty acids and the vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D and E. The recommended intake of nutrients depends on health status, for example illness. Micronutrient supplementation is regarded a safe, low-cost and effective option to complement diet.
