Filgueiras, M. S., Rocha, N. P., Novaes, J. F., & Bressan, J. (2020). Vitamin D status, oxidative stress, and inflammation in children and adolescents: A systematic review. Critical reviews in food science and nutrition, 60(4), 660–669. https://doi.org/10.1080/10408398.2018.1546671
In this systematic review it was investigated if vitamin D status can be associated with oxidative stress and inflammation in children and adolescents. Published observational or interventional studies were included with participants aged 2 to 19 years old, in which oxidative and/or inflammatory stress biomarkers were measured. Associations were found between vitamin D status and biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation. For example, an inverse association between vitamin D status and interleukin-6 (IL-6) and cathepsin S. More research should be performed with this specific age group, since these ages are underrepresented in many studies.
